| Welcome
to our Birthing Center - Where Families Are Born!
Having a baby is one of the most exciting - and one
of the scariest! - times in your life. It's wonderful
to have family and friends around to help as you make
the transition to being a whole new family - whether
it's your first or your fifth!
The Birthing Center at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital
has many ways to make this special day a safe and happy
birthday.
The Birthing Center offers pleasant, homey birthing
rooms where you will labor, birth your baby, recover,
and get to know your baby postpartum. At BMH, we like
to think of the experience in our Birthing Center as
like a home birth in the safety of a hospital.
In the Birthing Center at BMH, we now offer
epidurals for your pain management, and whirlpool tubs
for labor and water births (depending on your provider).
There are also showers, birthing balls and lots of different
comfort strategies. The Birthing Center nurses offer
you one-on-one support..
If you wish to have a tour of the Birthing Center
at BMH, call 257-8226.
After the baby is born, he or she can stay right with
you . You'll enjoy our recliners, a place for Dad to
sleep overnight right in your room....your own little
nest to settle into your new life. Visitors can
come to see you whenever you choose.
Brattleboro Memorial Hospital invites new parents to
choose from a special Room Service Menu, offered by
the Nutrition Services Department. There are a number
of gourmet selections available, and the best part is
you can order from this menu most any time thatıs convenient
for you. Bon apetit!
The hospital offers a lactation consultant to
help you get started breast feeding, if you so choose.
Educational videos are also provided to help you learn
to care for your baby.
BMH offers many prenatal and postpartum classes including
Lamaze.
Other prenatal classes include Breastfeeding Basics,
Baby Basics, and prenatal exercise. There is also a
Sibling Class held quarterly to bring a child in to
see where his or her future baby brother or sister will
be born. Postpartum classes include the very popular
New Moms' Network
where moms and babies get together to learn (through
speakers) and discuss various problems encountered and
their solutions (in non-led group sessions) every week.
A postpartum exercise class is also offered. For information
on class dates, etc., call 257-8877.
NEW DOULA PROGRAM AT BMH BIRTHING CENTER
The BMH Birthing Center recognizes that women giving
birth often welcome the help of extra loving hands,
and so is now offering the services of volunteer
doulas.
The word "doula" comes from a Greek term
used to describe a woman who ministers to new mothers.
The doula movement, which began about ten years ago,
has gained in popularity in recent years, and today
is recognized as invaluable for women who have little
or no support during labor from partners or other family
or friends.
If you are interested in learning more about doulas,
or would like to train to become a volunteer doula at
BMH, call Dawn Kersula, RN, FACCE, Perinatal Educator
at BMH - 802-257-8278, or e-mail her at dkersula@bmhvt.org.
