Brattleboro
Memorial Hospital has four modern operating suites including
a C-section operating room in the Birthing Center, and
more than 25 board-certified surgeons who perform many
routine and advanced procedures. The surgeons and OR
staff use high tech state of the art equipment to ensure
patients the best possible care. Most types of surgery
except open heart, vascular, neurosurgery, and organ
transplants are done at BMH. You can see a list of some
of the surgeries and procedures commonly performed here
by clicking on the sidebar.
Patients for surgery are admitted to our Ambulatory
Care Unit. The Ambulatory Care Unit is located next
to the operating suite on the main floor of the hospital.
We also provide services such as lithotripsy, gastroenterology
procedures and several pain control procedures.
When patients are scheduled for surgery they come in
for a preoperative assessment appointment which
is scheduled by their doctor's office. This is a convenient
way to have necessary testing performed before surgery,
and for the patient to obtain additional information
about their procedure. A telephone interview with the
anesthesiologist is also available before surgery so
you can discuss anesthesia options in advance if you
wish.

The Anesthesia Department at BMH is staffed by four
highly qualified and experienced physicians. In addition
to Board Certification in Anesthesiology, all have additional
training representing the following medical specialties:
cardiac anesthesia, pediatric anesthesia, pain management,
and internal medicine. Throughout your surgery, your
anesthesiologist will be at your side to make sure that
your vital functions stay within safe limits, and to
provide timely treatment as necessary. Your anesthesiologist
is also responsible for supervising your care by our
Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) nursing staff. Control
of post surgical pain is a high priority, and each anesthesiologist
is skilled in tailoring your anesthesia to provide the
most comfortable recovery possible for you. In many
cases, the type of anesthetic used depends on the planned
surgery or procedure. To view a complete list of anesthesia
procedures for surgery at BMH, click on anesthesia techniques
on the sidebar. In addition, a variety of procedures
for control of chronic or acute pain is available by
referral from your doctor. These commonly include epidural
steroid injections, trigger point injections, occipital
nerve blocks.
BMH surgeries are supported by the Pathology
and Histology sections of the BMH Laboratory. BMH enjoys
the services of two experienced board certified pathologists
who read slides of tissue to make diagnoses. The pathologists
consult with each other on cases and also often request
second opinions from pathology specialists at Dartmouth-Hitchcock
Medical Center.
